Hi everybody. It's been just about a year since my last journal. I still post my art here but I have had a really hard time keeping up since Eclipse. The website moves so slowly and I find it really slow to go through deviations, and it makes my laptop fan go crazy. I'm sorry for not keeping up on everyone's art as much as I would have liked. If anyone has tips for how to make going through my inbox not involve so many clicks, let me know.

A lot has happened in the past year. I started a PhD in Celtic and Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh. I'm doing it part-time from home. My topic is women's work songs and musical cultures in the British, Irish and Scandinavian fishing industries from the mid-19th to the mid-20th centuries. It's been going pretty well. I love my topic and I enjoy working on it. I'm hoping to go to Shetland and the Isle of Man for fieldwork later this year.

Health stuff has been a mixed bag. I got diagnosed with POTS and I am on a ton of medicines. I feel really sleepy and out of it a lot of the time. Like a lot of people during the pandemic, my mental health has not always been great. I'm doing some physiotherapy but it's hard to do it when I have so much vertigo. So that's been kind of tough.

I made a Redbubble shop for my Women of 1000 series if anyone wants to check that out: http://tinyurl.com/yyd9z8ep

Now, time for a good old-fashioned feature. Here is some of the art that has been inspiring me lately.

May Feature

10 min read
Hello everyone. It's been awhile! Like everyone else, my sense of motivation and routine has been scrambled by the weird situation we're all in now, even though my everyday life hasn't actually changed that much. The past week has also been weird because my dad had a small stroke a week ago. He's going to be okay, so don't worry about that. But I feel even less energy to create things than usual. Still, I've got some unfinished Women of 1000 drawings started as well as other ones I've been researching, so I hope to be able to share more of that with you soon. Painter

Like most of you, I'm sad about Eclipse being forced on everyone soon. This will probably be the last of my journals I do in the normal editor. I love doing these journals and putting together beautiful art that I think needs more attention. I also love having the feature journal on my front page, but I don't think it's going to work the same way in Eclipse, which will be a real shame. Eclipse just isn't ready. I did the Sound of Silence movement and found it challenging to be away from dA for even a few days. It doesn't seem to have done anything; it seems like the devs have put their fingers in their ears about Eclipse. I'm not leaving dA though. I've been here since 2007, and I still think it's the best format for sharing and curating art. You can find me on Twitter though at women_1000 where I mostly just share my Women of 1000 art and cool archaeology and art. I don't like that website, but I do see lots of interesting things there, so hey ho.

Still, there's good stuff going on too. I finally got to start Aimovig in March, the first medicine actually designed to treat migraines. I still have the chronic daily migraine, but my vertigo has definitely gone down, and I'm finding I can do more things in a day and have more busy days in a week than I could before. So that's definitely an improvement! A new birth control medicine has also had a huge positive impact on my life since my periods have always been debilitating, but now I don't have to deal with them at all. What a difference that makes. That plus my antidepressant means that my medicines are all getting along relatively well with each other and making improvements, which is what my taking this year off was all about. The weather has been unbelievably nice here, and I've been trying to take walks when I can. With my parents I've been watching Gilmore Girls (their first time seeing it) and with my dad and sister I've been watching Pokémon, both of which are really fun shows. My mom got the idea of doing puzzles in the conservatory, which I help with sometimes. Add-ons for Firefox Icon ultramini

Now, here's an art feature for you all! Check out some of the art that's been inspiring me lately. :)

Imbolc Feature

11 min read
Happy Imbolc, and Happy St Brigid's Day! Today was a big day in medieval Ireland. Imbolc was one of the four quarter-days in the Irish calendar. In Tochmarc Emire, a text recorded in the 10th or 11th century, it's described as "when the ewes are milked at spring's beginning". The festival has pre-Christian origins, but nothing is known about how it was celebrated before Christianity. It's unknown whether the pre-Christian goddess Brigid was already associated with Imbolc, and little is understood about the relationship between the goddess Brigid and the saint Brigid. In medieval legends, all recorded by Christian authors, the goddess was associated with learning, poetry, prophesying, healing, and metal-working. The saint was strongly associated with milking and nursing and miracles of the natural world. The Irish believed she had been Christ's nursemaid, and she was called on to protect nursing animals.

Saint Brigid featured prominently in Catholic devotions in Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Hebrides in the 18th and 19th centuries. One popular devotion was weaving reeds together into a St Brigid's Cross. As the main processors of cloth and wool, women were particularly associated with ewes in medieval Ireland. Tellach was a legal process of claiming someone else's land. A man would enter the land three times flanked by horses, but a woman would enter flanked by ewes.

(Clockwise from upper left: Art by Mary Sumner of a sheep with snowdrops, the flowers that have just started blooming; St Brigid's Cross; happy sheep in Ireland; and a 14th century image of St Brigid milking a cow from St Michael's Tower on Glastonbury Tor.)

I'm really excited about it being Imbolc today! It's still very windy and a little chilly here, but the sun is out today and I saw my first snowdrops of the season while out and about in our village with my family. And we even got to see some adorable bunnies!

It's been awhile since I did a feature journal. Without further ado, here's some of the art that's been inspiring me lately!

Hey everyone! I'm doing the Favourite Games challenge that SirWongIII posted! I'll try my best to fill all the letters, but some of them might be cheating a little bit... ;) Like Sir Wong, I'll try to add fanart where I can, though I haven't been able to find it for all of the games so some will be official art!

I've never played this game myself, but I used to watch byrch play it and hear her talk about it. Perhaps that's when the obsession began...

Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones
norree introduced me to this awesome game, so I'm featuring some throwback pieces of hers, including for her favourite pairing from the game -- Seth and Franz!! Such naughty knights... This game has great characters and fun gameplay! My fave was Joshua.

FREE THE GUBS!!! This game is a new favourite, and I got a copy for my birthday a few weeks ago! We played it (me, my sister and my dad) the other day, and I first had a shocking victory before suffering a legendary humiliation... this is a great card game!

Harvest Moon
Where do I even begin? I love this game with an overwhelming love! It's one of my favourite franchises of all time. My two favourite titles are More Friends of Mineral Town for the Gameboy Advance and A Wonderful Life for the Gamecube. And my favourite Harvest Moon artist is my sister norree, who has the best art for this game ever and has been drawing it for years! We have had a lot of fun draw sessions where we draw random Harvest Moon characters too. Here's some of her Harvest Moon art!!

Inuyasha: Secret of the Cursed Mask
My sister has been watching Inuyasha lately and it got me thinking about this game, which I played a long time ago! When we were growing up, we didn't have any video game consoles, but we'd go over to our friend Dennis's house and play video games there. I used to watch Dennis and his brother play this all the time, and I loved the rare times I got to play it myself!

When you walk away, please don't hear me say, "Please, oh baby! Don't go!" Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight... It's hard to let go... Yes, I watched that commercial a million times, and I also loved playing this game!!

Oblivion
I've never played this game myself, but when I was home this summer and feeling really sleepy all the time, I had so much fun watching my sister play it. I could just sit and watch it for hours! The landscape is so beautiful, and it's so fun exploring the map and not knowing what strange ancient ruins or mysterious quests you're going to find.

Pokémon Stadium 2
Although the Pokemon card game also deserves a special shout out here, I chose Pokemon Stadium 2 because it got me totally enamoured with the Pokemon world!! norree and I used to play it with byrch in her basement on the N64. I LOVED scrolling through the Pokemon to assemble my team based on which ones I thought looked the coolest (spoiler: lots of water and psychic Pokemon!), and we had so much fun playing all the minigames!! Oh, and if you're wondering what Pokemon I am, it's definitely Psyduck.

I've had my file since 2004, when some boys in my study hall were talking about this great game they were playing... it's been a little while since I logged on, but I still play it a few times a year! I fell in love with Zelda by playing her as my main on Super Smash. I've also spent a lot of time watching my sister play Twilight Princess, and I myself played Spirit Tracks on the DS. I also made this Zelda board game for the group Artcrossing, and it got such a lukewarm reception from the recipient I always wish I still had it!

And there you have it! I hope you all enjoyed learning some more about games I've played (or watched) and enjoyed! It turns out a lot of my favourite games start with S... Here are some honourable mentions!

Super Mario Sunshine: The only flaw in this game is that Luigi isn't in it.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: The best Harry Potter game on both the GBA and the Gamecube!
Sonic Adventure 2: Just you and me, we'll escape to the city... also, CHAO GARDEN!
Mao: The only rule of Mao is that you don't talk about the rules of Mao.

Hello everyone! I hope you had a good summer and are settling into fall well. Fall is my favourite season! I was sitting in the garden at the end of summer, playing my ukulele, and I wrote this song, "Early Autumn Breeze". It's my first original song for the ukulele! I hope you like it. :)

I'm in the middle of the next Women of 1000 illustration - it's coming along nicely so far! :) I'm also hoping to do a Harvest Moon contest and some fanart soon. But the big thing coming up is Inktober! This will be my third year doing it, and I really love it. I don't feel any need to post every day - I just love drawing every day. :) This year I'm going to draw headshots of different historical figures every day. Unlike my Women of 1000 project, it won't just be women, and it won't just be people from a thousand years ago! I'm looking forward to the challenge of drawing a lot of people who have existing references of what their face looked like.

It's been rainy here - good for the plants! I'm reading an amazing book called Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. It's incredible. The author is a Potawatomi botanist. She writes with a beautiful poetic voice about the intertwined insights of indigenous science and Western science. Her chapters are so immersive, and I'm learning so much about the world around me and different ways of relating to that world. I'd really recommend the book!!
